What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is considered as a chronic autoimmune skin disorder that appears in the form of scaly rash. It affects all ages and it comes in five different types. Although psoriasis is not contagious, it can also be very disturbing and irritating, especially when it flares up.

What are the characteristics of psoriasis?
Psoriasis is mainly characterized by red, scaly patches of skin. These usually come with much defined edges and are normally covered with silvery white buildup. These are the dead skin cells. It appears on both sides of the body. The most common parts of the body affected by this specific skin condition are: the back of the elbow and knees, belly button and natal cleft or between the buttocks and scalp. However, it can also occur in other parts of the body not mentioned above. Some cases only display very minimal patches that are almost unnoticeable. However, there are also instances that it can be debilitating.

What are the typical triggers of psoriasis?
There are many known triggers to worsen this condition. It will be best to know what these are in order to avoid them, if possible.
  • Genetic predisposition.
    • It is believed that individuals who suffer from psoriasis are often genetically predisposed and those who have family history of this ailment.
  • Stress.
    • A major trigger, both physical and emotional stress are known factors to worsen an existing psoriasis condition.
  • Certain medications.
    • There are several types of medications that can affect the condition of psoriasis. Some of these are: beta-blockers, lithium NSAIDS, among others.
  • Infection.
    • There are certain types of systemic infections that can trigger psoriasis.
How to psoriasis?
There is no known cure to date for this skin disorder. However, the good news is that mild cases of psoriasis can clear up on its own and relapse can occur at a much later time. There are also cases wherein recurrence does not happen. The best way to psoriasis is to minimise its symptoms and manage it so that it does not lead to secondary skin infections.

The use of medicated creams as well as naturally prepared products that have known properties to soothe itching and help moisturize dry skin are all helpful is managing symptoms.
